William Wilberforce was a British politician and philanthropist who lived in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. As a devout Christian, Wilberforce was deeply moved by his faith's teachings on social justice and the inherent worth of every individual. He dedicated his life and resources to the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade and the eventual emancipation of slaves. Wilberforce saw the 'we' of humanity as an interconnected community… recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their race or social status.

To ‘exist’ simply means to be alive or present. But the very fact that we are conscious beings brings the ability to perceive, think, and experience the world around us… and to do so with a sense of meaning. Existence brings opportunity to form relationships, and to appreciate the beauty and complexity of life. And a fundamental emotion within this, is our ability to experience ‘awe’ and ‘wonder’. Mindful of this, our life purpose may not be to merely strive to ‘exist’... rather that existence enables us to embark on our very own adventure.

We’re encouraged to consider the life and ministry of Jesus (the Christ) as a guide or example for ourselves. Out of Jesus’ 33 years on earth, and three years of ministry, 90% of his time was simply being fully present ‘with’ groups of people – notably lepers, prostitutes, tax collectors, Roman Centurions and Samaritan women. Might being ‘with’ others be our greatest calling? At Christmas (or Advent), there it is, loud and clear – ‘Emmanuel’ which means ‘God with us’! Without suggesting that ‘doing’ helpful things isn’t valued… being ‘with’ does seem to be very Jesus-like!

Christmas Eve 1910, William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, was to speak at a convention. However he was quite elderly, and his poor health prevented his attendance. Thousands were gathered, eager to hear from this great man. It was resolved that a Telegram could be read to those present. At the time, a charge was levied on each word in a Telegram, this may have influenced what was dispatched. On the night, someone came to the platform, explained the circumstances – the crowd grew hushed with expectancy. In opening the sealed telegram, one word was revealed: “Others.” We surmise what Booth was saying: “Remember, while enjoying the conference, we’re to follow Jesus’ example – be ‘others’ centered.”
